Bootlegged… for real?

Really guys? When Marcus takes out his time to send you his CD and contacts you, you do this kinda bullshit? If you support Marcus, hip hop music and anything that derives from real Hip Hop, then buy Marcus’ CD, DON’T JUST DOWNLOAD IT. To big artists, the few bucks they spare from downloads may not hurt them as much as the independent artists. Artists like Marcus D need your support to do what they do and make you guys happy. You think this is for themselves? No. They do their music for their audience’s enjoyment. So do your part and support these independent artists like Marcus and buy their CDs if you haven’t already.

Here is the original message from Marcus himself:

I apologize for the PSA, but just roll with me. Apparently Shoshin and Bop Alloy have been uploaded to the internet for free download; not surprising. I may sound like a broken record, but I’m confused and need some help clarifying a few things. You (underground hip hop fans) are always (rightfully) complaining about the trash music that’s practically shoved down your throats everyday. You’re sick of the lack of substance in the lyrics and lack of musicality in the beats. You want more from your music and you demand more from your artists. You “Think Different”. Right?

Then what causes you to go out of your way to hurt the independent artists that represent you? They spend years of their lives and put blood, sweat, and tears into their music for you. Then they pay to press it up and put it out so you can enjoy it the way it was meant to be enjoyed. But, instead of investing in their careers and buying ONE CD, you bootleg them, upload a version of their album at half its quality to the internet, and encourage others to do the same.

This may come as a shock…but YOU are the reason why the radio stations play what they play. Because when it comes down to it, you don’t really stand for what you say you do. Independent artists need your support, and not just your moral support. I wish money wasn’t an issue just as much as the next person, but unfortunately it makes the world go round, and coincidentally plays a large part in the production of music. If you see any kind of future in an artist, support them. It’s easy to feel like an artist’s musical process doesn’t involve you, but it does, directly. You play the most important role in an indie artist’s success and you may not even realize it. Wake up. Without you, they, we, don’t exist… A lot of you have bought the album, and I/we appreciate you. You’re not the target of this reminder. Shoshin is only $15 and Bop Alloy is even less.

The Power of Creation it can redefine livin’

Reminiscent of Common’s “Like Water for Chocolate”, Pete Rock & CL Smooth “Mecca and the Soul Brother” or Guru’s “Jazzmatazz Vol.1”, Substantial and Marcus D’s fusion into Bop Alloy is turning into a soulful, classic hip hop duo for modern times.

It’s been a long time since I could get down to an album-whether it be jazz, hip-hop, blues, indie, etc.-like I can to this one. I touched on this subject yesterday on the Illinoize album, but the difference between the two is that Substantial and Marcus D’s collabo is 100% raw, original hip-hop. I just stumbled onto “I’m Here” this morning and I’m already comparing this duo with Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek on Reflection Eternal, Andre 3000 & Big Boi on their first three albums, and even a technicolor Batman & Robin on some BAMF! shark repellent shit.

Smooth? These guys could feature Coltrane on a track and do him justice.

Fresh? Bop Alley is so new to the scene that the group isn’t even featured on Wikipedia…

Cool? These two could take Miles for a ride on the rebirth of Cool.

Pure? Check Brita on that one.

I’m not trying to tirar las flores (a Chilean phrase that translates to throw the flowers, but essentially means “to be on their nuts”), but their tracks seamlessly blend jazz and hip hop in a way that Guru only dreamt of on his Jazzmatazz volumes.

Alright, I’m tired of hearing myself think, I just wanna sit back in my office chair and tune in to prePAIRED before I too prepare for six hours of class with the little Opus Dei minions.

When 5 o’clock comes around this album deserves nothing less than a fine glass of Chilean wine accompanied by a tightly rolled spliff. Just watch the smoke rise and drift into the realm of Bop Alloy…

Marcus D in Japan

Marcus D just landed in Japan um-some hours ago but if you’re in Japan, hit up the show he’s doing with Shing02, Cise Starr, Substantial and others during the coming week. I heard the songs that they are performing are ONLY the very best. AND here are some pics of Bop Alloy’s (Substantial & Marcus D) album!! I’ve never seen an album cover like this so I find this HELLA DOPE. Props to both of them.

So yeah and other news is that Marcus will be doing the Nujabes Tribute Show over there so look out for that. More details soon. Man, this dude knows his shit and I’m glad his music is going farther than space!

Fourth single on the Bop Alloy Album w/ Bop Alloy, Mello D, and Steph the Sapphic Songstress! Dope as fuck. Makes you really think, doesn’t it?

Support Substantial & Marcus D at http://www.juno.co.uk/products/Still-Think-Different/376977-01/ and buy their vinyl of “still think different”
